THE CAMP EXPERIENCE
Our A-Team members teach specialized outdoor education lessons to each 6th grade class during camp. Below are descriptions of some of the experiences that the 6th grade students are scheduled to have.
ARCHERY
HIGH ROPES
LOW ROPES
At Archery, students are taught the skills required for shooting with bows and arrows as well as the safety procedures necessary for this activity. A-Team members help students evaluate what they have learned through actual shooting experiences while giving them plenty of opportunities for success in hitting given targets.
INITIATIVES
At Initiatives, A-Team members lead the class through team-building activities that require cooperation, thought, and trust. A-Team members are responsible for creating thought-provoking activities and encouraging the students to be supportive of their classmates.
CHALLENGE COURSE
At the Challenge Course, the students are led through a series of trials that encourage communication and cooperation. The activities at the Challenge Course push the students to exit their comfort zones and try new things that they previously believed were beyond their capabilities. A-Team here are in charge of leading the students through the course and telling an imaginative story to tie the challenges together.
As students enter the High Ropes area they are given instructions, safety harnesses, and helmets, along with assurances that the A-Team adults will support them as they navigate through suspended challenges high above the ground. In this safe environment, students learn to attempt things they may not have ever thought they could do, such as going down a zip line.
ROCK WALL
At this site, students are given safety equipment to use while attempting to climb a vertical wall. They are tied into a pulley system connected to an A-Team member and then are instructed to use the hand and foot holds to reach the top of the wall and ring a cow bell to announce their accomplishment. A-Team members encourage classmates to be supportive and enthusiastic for each climber.
At Low Ropes, students learn the fundamental safety techniques that are used throughout camp while conquering challenging courses that test balance and promote an attitude of trust. A-Team members teach and model safety procedures while encouraging good communication and problem-solving skills.
ULTIMATE TEAM CHALLENGE
At Ultimate Team Challenge, the whole class must work together to complete a series of imaginative tasks. The A-Team leaders are responsible for creating an intricate and meaningful obstacle course that will require the class to use teamwork as well as testing their resourcefulness.
CANOEING
The focus at Canoeing is cooperation. Since many students have never been in a canoe before, the lesson begins with a tutorial about paddling and boat safety. Once in the water, students are challenged to work together to complete a scavenger hunt throughout the lake.
